Abstract

|
Pneumocystis carinii infection was provoked in experimental rats with administration of cyclophosphamide via per oral and intraperitoneal injection.
The autopsied lung tissues and stamping smear slides of the treated rats were stained with various, staining methods and examined by light microscope. The results were obtained as follows:
1. Pneumocystis carinii infection could be induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection and oral administration of cyclophosphamide.
2. The grade of Pneumocystis carinii infection in experimental rats was moderate degree, which was judged from the number of cysts and histopathological changes in the lung tissue.
3. Gomori methenamine silver, toluidine blue O and Giemsa staining were highly reliable techniques for detection of Pneumocystis carinii.
